GEO explained

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO is the practice of making sure a brand gets named, recommended, or cited inside the answers generated by AI tools, rather than simply ranked in a list of links.

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It is the practice of making sure a brand gets named, recommended, or cited inside the answers generated by AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Google's AI overview, rather than simply ranked in a list of links.

You may also hear it called AEO, Answer Engine Optimization. The two are essentially the same idea. This page explains what GEO is, how it is different from SEO, and why it matters for a D2C (direct-to-consumer) brand.

The problem

The problem GEO solves

For twenty years, the way people found a product was consistent: type into Google, scan a list of blue links, click one. Search engine optimization, SEO, was the job of being near the top of that list.

That is changing. A growing number of people now open an AI assistant and ask a question directly. Instead of a list of ten links, the AI writes a short answer and names a handful of brands. The brands it names win the consideration. The ones it does not name are effectively invisible, no matter how good their website is or where they rank on Google.

GEO is the work of being one of the brands AI names.

It matters for a specific reason: being named inside an AI answer carries an implied recommendation. The AI already did the filtering for you. So a brand that shows up in the answer earns more trust than a blue link ever did, and the buyer is further along the path to purchase before they even visit your website.

The difference

How GEO is different from SEO

It is worth being precise, because the two are often confused.

They are not enemies. They overlap and can work together. But they are not the same job, and a brand can rank well on Google while being completely absent from AI answers, which is exactly what we see when we audit D2C brands.

Under the hood

How AI decides who to name

To do GEO, it helps to understand roughly how AI chooses who to recommend. It is not one magic formula, but it comes down to a few things.

Citable, readable content

AI needs text it can actually read and quote, with your name attached. This is where D2C brands most often trip: a huge share of their differentiation lives in images, which AI cannot reliably read. Beautiful product photos, badge graphics, and illustrated claims say nothing to an AI crawler. The information has to exist as real text on the page.

Outside corroboration

AI trusts other people talking about you far more than you talking about yourself. Reviews, mentions, citations, coverage. Most of what AI cites is, to be blunt, earned media. This is slower to build and it is a core part of GEO.

Clear identity and structure

AI has to understand what your brand is, what you sell, who it is for. Structured data and clear, honest pages help it file you under the right thing, rather than guessing.

Consistency over time

AI platforms do not change their opinion overnight. They notice brands that are consistently present and credible over weeks and months. This is why GEO is ongoing work, not a one-time fix.

For D2C specifically

Why GEO matters specifically for D2C brands

D2C brands live and die on discovery. There is no shelf, no storefront foot traffic. A buyer has to find you first, and if that finding now starts inside AI, that is where you have to exist.

The highest-intent questions a D2C buyer asks are the comparison and recommendation ones (which brand is best for X). Those are exactly the questions moving from Google to AI. Which means the top of your funnel, the moment someone decides to consider you at all, is increasingly happening inside an AI answer.

If you are absent there, it is not a small miss. It means you are not in the consideration set at all. You never compete on price or quality, because you were never in the room.

The D2C version of the GEO problem: your brand can rank number one on Google and still be invisible to AI, because your differentiation is locked in images and you have no outside signals AI can cite. Fixing that is the heart of D2C GEO work.

The real actions

What GEO work actually involves

01

An audit of how visible the brand is across the main AI platforms, and which of the buyer’s questions it shows up for.

02

Finding the text that is locked in images and making it readable, so AI can use it.

03

Building content around the questions buyers actually ask, including comparison and recommendation content.

04

Making the site’s structure and identity clear to AI through structured data and clean pages.

05

Earning outside mentions, reviews, and citations over time.

06

Measuring which questions the brand now shows up for, and adjusting as platforms change.

The honest caveats

There is no guarantee of a number-one spot. AI does not work on a fixed public ranking, and anyone who promises one is not being straight with you.

It takes time. Small fixes move in weeks, but real, compounding visibility takes months, because AI has to notice and trust consistent signals. Treat anyone who promises overnight rankings with suspicion.
